Celebrating Preaching Cohort 2026
by the Rev. Catherine Warner
In March 2026, clergy from across the Diocese gathered for the second DOMA Preaching Cohort. The cohort focused on several areas: strengthening the craft of expository preaching, mutual encouragement, and building practical tools for preparing and delivering sermons. Participants represented a wide range of ministry experience and the cohort created a space for honest conversation, learning, and growth.
One of the biggest themes that emerged was the value of moving from simply “putting a sermon together” to approaching preparation with greater intentionality and structure. While some seasoned preachers found parts of the material familiar, many appreciated the opportunity to revisit the basics, sharpen their skills, and receive fresh encouragement for their preaching ministry.
For many, another key takeaway was a renewed understanding that preaching is more than transferring information. It is a pastoral and spiritual conviction where God’s Word meets people’s lives. Several participants discovered new freedom as they learned to deliver sermons from an outline rather than reading a full manuscript. While this can be challenging to prepare, it allows for a more natural engagement with the congregation, gives room to adapt in the moment, and brings greater connection to their sermons.
Some also highlighted the value of specific, practical coaching from hearing each other’s sermons. Members of the cohort noted growth areas such as making better eye contact, smiling more, and strengthening vocal delivery. Many found that even small adjustments make a meaningful difference in how listeners internalize and respond to the message.
Looking ahead, several expressed enthusiasm for continuing the cohort’s conversation through opportunities such as a preaching peer network, sermon review groups, and future cohorts exploring additional topics, including Anglican approaches to preaching and specialized preaching contexts like funerals, weddings, and high holy days.
The Diocese is thankful for all who participated and for their commitment to faithfully proclaiming the Gospel. The Preaching Cohort was a rich opportunity to learn together, encourage one another, and continue growing as preachers who serve their congregations with wisdom and care.
