🌱The Side Chapel at All Souls is Complete!🌱
by Brendan Rigdon
The chapel at All Souls (Richmond, VA) took two years and two months for me to finish. It was a joy! A lot of my heroes painted in chapels. The altar space is where we tabernacle the communion bread. It’s also a space the priests open for us to use for reconciliation/confession. Bearing in mind the use of the altar, I wanted the paintings to be good bread for the soul of the Christian Pilgrim.
I wanted to paint for those who are struggling and want more of Jesus. I enjoyed painting the panels and seeing them as windows you can peer through to see the sacred. I hoped by painting the death of Jesus so vividly one may trust that he has paid their debt in full. I hoped by painting the resurrected and crowned Christ offering the bread and the cup, that believers would take heart in their trials.
I paint in the classical way of underpainting then layering oils directly and indirectly. I like to use color and texture. I was afraid to begin the project because all of my processes as an oil painter would become immediately public. It seemed once I got started the path became clear. That’s the way of it sometimes.
