Drawn by Beauty, Not Driven by Duty:Jonathan Edwards and the Vision of God
By Cheryl Brunner

Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) is usually known for his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” which has been called both the best and worst sermon in American history. It played a key role in the Great Awakening, which swept up and down the American colonies and helped set the stage for the American Revolution.
Few know that Edwards is now regarded as one of the five or six top theologians in the history of Christianity, or that beauty was more integral to his vision of God than for any other Christian thinker in history. Or that Yale University Press has just completed the critical edition of his 73-volumes of Works.
Christians in Africa and Asia and Europe are now looking to Edwards as the one theologian who has the most to say to Christians in the global church of this new century. They realize that he was a foremost theologian of revival and an unparalleled combination of heart and intellect.
Gerald McDermott, Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College, is the author of thirteen books. His co-authored Theology of Jonathan Edwards (Oxford University Press) is the winner of Christianity Today’s top award in 2013 for theology and ethics.
